A senior may suddenly drop an object, struggle to lift one arm, or feel as though one leg has become heavy or numb.

The American Stroke Association lists sudden one-sided weakness, numbness, or paralysis among the major warning signs of a TIA.

A simple test is to ask the person to raise both arms. If one arm drifts downward or cannot be raised normally, seek emergency medical help.

2. Facial Drooping

A TIA may temporarily weaken the muscles on one side of the face.

Look for:

An uneven smile
One side of the mouth drooping
Facial numbness
One eye or side of the face appearing lower

This is the F in FAST — Face.

B — Balance

Sudden loss of balance or coordination.

E — Eyes

Sudden blurred vision, double vision, or loss of sight.

F — Face

One side of the face droops.

A — Arms

One arm becomes weak or numb.

S — Speech

Speech becomes slurred, strange, or difficult.

T — Time

Call emergency medical services immediately.
